The City of Kouvola has two museum units: Kouvola Art Museum and Kouvola City Museum.
POIKILO is located in Kouvola-talo within a walking distance from the Kouvola bus and railway stations. Poikilo has more than 1000m2 of exhibition rooms in two stores, each of them usually hosting separate exhibitions. Kouta gallery is adjacent to Poikilo.
Kouvola-talo, designed by Erkki Valovirta, is regarded as one of the most beautiful postmodern buildings in Finland. Kouvola-talo has a café, Sävel Bistro (tel. +358 106 661 021). Reservations for meetings rooms, the concert hall and the auditorium can be made by telephone (+358 20 615 4749). The Art Gallery is accessible for all and there is plenty of parking space around the building.
The Kouvola City Museum consists of ten local museums and one local history and culture house. Four of these museums are special museums: the Pharmacy Museum, the School Museum, the Fire Brigade Museum and the Finnish Shop Museum. There are 3 local history museums, in Elimäki, Sippola and Valkeala. There are also 3 house museums: the Puolakka House Museum, the Railway Worker’s Museum and the Workers’ Quarters Museum. The Local History and Culture House was designed by Lars Sonck and it is located in Kettumäki. The City Museum’s collections consist of about 35,000 items. The City Museum also holds a large archive of photographs.
