Immigrant Education in Basic Education
Immigrant pupils arriving in Kouvola with no Finnish language skills are assigned to Eskolanmäki School’s preparatory education group. Pupils study in the preparatory group from six months to a year and are then transferred to study in their local school. The purpose of small group preparatory education is to support the immigrant pupil’s Finnish language learning and integration into Finnish society while not forgetting the pupil’s own culture.
All children permanently residing in Finland, foreign nationals included, are subject to compulsory education. Compulsory education starts in the year a child turns seven years of age and ends when the syllabus of basic education has been completed or 10 years after the beginning of compulsory education. Basic education, text books and other material and school meals are free.
Finnish Language in Night School
Adults and youth who do not speak Finnish as their first language may study Finnish language and literature in Kouvola night school.
Finnish as a second language courses are divided in three levels:
The purpose of the education is to help adult students recognise and deepen the language skills they have already acquired, and to give them the Finnish skills needed for everyday communication situations in Finnish society, working life and studies. Students are also taught the characteristics of Finnish culture in contrast to their own culture and some Finnish literature.
Finnish for foreigners in liberal adult education institution
The Kouvolan Kansalaisopisto adult education centre organises Finnish for foreigners courses, with the purpose of teaching foreigners how to survive in everyday situations by using Finnish.
