Student Admission
The main student selection criterion for the general upper secondary education is the average grade of the basic education certificate. The general upper secondary school is an institution providing general education. The purpose of studying is to provide students with the capabilities to pass the matriculation examination and to continue to higher education. Students have a chance to decide on the contents of their studies by basing their syllabus on their own interest and skills. Kouvola’s general upper secondary education institutions offer an ample amount of options for students interested in science, languages, arts or sports.
Non-graded General Upper Secondary Education
The scope of the syllabus of general upper secondary education is three years, but the studies may be accomplished in two, three or four years; the students may proceed in their studies if their situation or their study plans thus require. Grades cannot be duplicated, and there are no academic probations, but before students receive their final certificates they must first pass all the obligatory courses and a total of 75 courses.
Studying
The average scope of one general upper secondary education course is 38 lessons. The school year is divided into five periods. Students complete 5 to 7 courses during one period. Each course has five hours per week, except for music, fine arts and sports, which are distributed over two periods. After the period ends, examination week begins. After each period, students receive their period certificates which include all the grades for the courses they passed during the period.
Students who pass the upper secondary school syllabus receive a final certificate. Students who also pass the matriculation examinations receive a Matriculation Examination Certificate.
