The new Kouvola is a City with 90,000 residents, extensive services and many sides. Kouvola offers its residents and entrepreneurs a competitive environment and a framework for success. The new City of Kouvola received a total of €13,240,000 in merger aid. The new municipality is part of the same jurisdictions and administrative areas as the old City of Kouvola in regards to the government’s regional and local authorities and the regional divisions observed in the activities of the EU. The competitiveness of the new Kouvola is based on its diverse nature, good traffic communication, renewableforest and environmental expertise and strong entrepreneurial spirit. The purpose of the founding of the new municipality is to strengthen the structure of municipalities and services in North Kymenlaakso by merging six municipalities together in the beginning of the year 2009. The aim is to create a thriving municipality, which is able to turn the demographic decline into positive growth and to secure the availability and quality of services. In Kouvola, urban and rural live side-by-side. The Kymi River winding through the region serves some of the largest companies in the global forest industry, giving the populace employment and a unique landscape. The other strong transportation element is railway. After all, Kouvola is the westernmost point of the Trans-Siberian railway from Asia to Europe and perhaps the most important junction in all of Finland. The City of Kouvola is located along highways 6 and 15. The train ride from Kouvola to the Metropolitan Helsinki Area takes about an hour. In Kouvola, nature offers the best scenery for outdoor activities and cottages. Repovesi National Park is located in the Region. Kouvola also has one of the biggest garrisons in Finland, the Vekaranjärvi garrison, and helicopter base in Utti.
